Mission: Accepted! U.S. College Admissions Insights for International Students
February 25, 2025
While this year's University of California application window has closed, savvy high school students are already preparing for next year's cycle. One crucial fact that many applicants discover too late: the GPA on your high school transcript is not what UC admissions officers see. The University of California recalculates your academic performance using their own specific formula—potentially changing your admissions prospects dramatically.
Developed by a UC Expert
Time and time again, I have witnessed the confusion and anxiety when applicants discover their transcript GPA differs from what the UCs actually consider. Many students apply to competitive UC campuses without knowing where they truly stand. This knowledge gap makes it nearly impossible to gauge your realistic chances of admission or identify areas for improvement before it is too late.
To help students understand and optimize their UC GPA, I have developed a new tool, the UC A-G GPA Calculator Pro. It is based on all official GPA calculation rules and policies set by the University of California. After entering your courses, the tool automatically calculates the three types of GPA used by the UCs: unweighted, weighted, and capped weighted GPA.
Plan Your UC Journey from Day One
One of the most powerful features of the A-G Calculator Pro is that you can start using it as early as 9th grade. Don't wait until junior or senior year to discover you have missed opportunities to optimize your GPA!

Understanding the 3 Types of GPA
Unweighted GPA: averages A-G course grades on a 4.0 scale, with no extra points for AP/IB/honors/college classes.
Weighted GPA: adds one extra point (A = 5, B = 4, C = 3) for all AP/ IB/ UC-approved honors/ California community college courses, with no limit.
Capped Weighted GPA: limits extra points to 8 semesters (4 year-long courses). For example, a maximum of 4 AP courses are considered.
The University of California recalculates your academic performance using only A-G subject courses taken in 10th and 11th grades. For more details on the A-G subject areas, read our article "The University of California: A-G Subject Requirements"
