Mission: Accepted! U.S. College Admissions Insights for International Students
November 25, 2024
The U.S. continues to be a global leader in international education, attracting over 1.1 million international students in the 2023/24 academic year. According to the newly published Open Doors 2024 Report, international students represent 6% of the total U.S. higher education population, back to to pre-pandemic levels.
For the first time in over 15 years, students from India have overtaken Chinese students as the largest group of international students. 331,602 Indian students are studying in the U.S., a 23% growth compared to the previous year. In contrast, the number of Chinese students has declined by 4.2%, settling at 277,398. This shift signals a significant change in international student demographics, reflecting broader geopolitical and demographic trends.
The Rise of Indian Students
Pandemic-Era Dynamics and Geopolitics
The COVID-19 pandemic and rising U.S.-China tensions have significantly affected Chinese student mobility. Strict travel restrictions, safety concerns, and political uncertainty discouraged many Chinese students from pursuing studies in the U.S. Meanwhile, American universities intensified outreach efforts in India, targeting highly skilled students in STEM fields like engineering, computer science, and math.
"U.S. universities realized that the Chinese numbers are not coming back, so they started tapping into the pool that is India," said Gaurav Khanna, an assistant professor of economics and immigration scholar at UC San Diego.
Post-Graduation Opportunities
Indian students are predominantly graduate-level scholars, with most pursuing STEM programs. These fields offer robust career prospects in the U.S., bolstered by pathways like the Optional Practical Training program and H-1B visa opportunities, making U.S. institutions an attractive choice.
India's Young Demographic Advantage
India boasts a rapidly growing university-age population, with over 40% of its population under 25. American universities provide unmatched opportunities for Indian students, particularly in technical and professional fields.
Broader Trends in International Education
Overall Growth in International Students
The 2023/24 academic year saw 1,126,690 international students in the U.S., a 4% increase from the previous year. This group represents 6% of the total U.S. higher education population, underscoring the global appeal of American universities.
Regional Trends
Asia remains the largest sending region, contributing 805,238 students, followed by Europe (90,600), Latin America and the Caribbean (85,891), and Sub-Saharan Africa (56,780).
Other Notable Source Countries
Beyond India and China, South Korea (43,149 students), Canada, and Taiwan round out the top five sending countries, though their numbers are significantly smaller. Emerging markets like Bangladesh, Ghana, and Pakistan also see record enrollments, highlighting a shift toward more diverse student populations.
Focus on STEM Fields
STEM programs dominate international student enrollment, with 56% of students studying engineering, computer science, math, or the physical and life sciences. Other popular fields include business (14%) and social sciences (8%). This trend reflects the strong career opportunities and extended work authorization available to STEM graduates.
Economic Impact
International students contribute significantly to the U.S. economy, with a $50 billion impact in 2023 alone. This highlights their role in sustaining higher education institutions and supporting local economies.
Institutional Recruitment Efforts
With 84% of U.S. institutions maintaining or increasing financial support for international recruitment, universities are doubling down on efforts to attract a diverse and talented global student body.
Top States
California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts, and Illinois lead as the most popular destinations for international students. States like Missouri (+35%), Michigan (+14%), and Illinois (+13%) saw notable growth.
Conclusion
The Open Doors 2024 Report highlights a significant shift in international student trends, with India overtaking China as the leading source of students in the U.S. This growth reflects India’s youthful demographic, successful outreach efforts, and the sustained appeal of American universities in an increasingly competitive global education landscape. While countries like the UK, Australia, and Canada have tightened their international student programs, American universities have leveraged their strong reputation to attract highly skilled students from all over the world.
